How to Record a Video of iPhone or iPad’s Screen

Recording iPhone or iPad’s screen could be super useful. Suppose you want to walk your friend or a family member through a particular process or show them a video or a special trick on your iPhone, iPad. Whatever the reason can be, the good news is that you can record your iPhone or iPad’s screen using a built-in app on Mac.

Many apps and services that allow you record iPhone screen natively. However, recording iPhone or iPad screen on a Mac will give you a lot of advantages. You will have the recorded file in Mac, which you could watch, edit and send an email to anyone.

Since iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple supported for recording iPhone or iPad’s screen for QuickTime app, the popular Apple multimedia software which has a vast range of features and functions. Let’s see how to record iPhone or iPad screen on a Mac.

How to Record iPhone or iPad’s screen

The first, connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac with a lightning cable.

If you are connecting your phone to your Mac for the first time, the system could ask you to “Trust”. Just tap on Accept and trust the devices.

Launch QuickTime Player app on your Mac by clicking on LaunchPad >> Other or you also can find it by typing the “Quicktime Player” into Spotlight Search box.

Then, select the “New Movie Recording” option from the File menu.

Or if you do not want to go through this hassle, just press the Option + Command + N button. This will launch the movie recording feature of QuickTime.

Now, QuickTime is programmed to use the Mac camera to record the video, and we want to record iPhone and iPad screen on Mac using this software, we will have to select something else. You should click the small inverted triangle shaped icon which is placed next to the Record button. This button is used to infuse in an option to select the secondary source to choose the camera.

You will see the name of your iPhone or iPad in the list if the device is connected and accepted correctly by your computer. Just click on the device’s name and within a few seconds, you will see the system would render the screen of iOS devices on your Mac. The whole screen of your device will be visible on your Mac screen.

It’s brilliant, isn’t it? No need for any useless third party app or software.

Note:

  • You can also select the quality of the video you want to record. You can select the “Maximum” or “High Quality” option.
  • If you also want to record the screen audio, you can select that option from the list. In a case you want to narrate something at the backed, you can select Mac’s mic for that.

Hit the Record button and start recording the screen on Mac. You can record iPhone or iPad screen for as long as you want. When you are done, just click on the Stop button in the preview window of the QuickTime app.

Quick tip: Pressing the Cmd + T, you’ll be able to directly trim your videos before saving them.

You can save the video recording file in many formats to your computer. The primary format is the .mov file. To export the recorded screen to other formats, select the “Export” option from the “File” menu of QuickTime and select the option you want

You can send the exported files to other channels via email or social media like Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook, Flickr, Mail…

It costs $17.99 and there are 2 versions available for Mac and Windows. The advantage of this software that it does not need any cable for recording your iPhone, iPad’s screen on a computer.

With Reflector, you can record iPhone’s screen at up to 60fps, allows you include the device frames when recording and record various devices simultaneously. However, it is not supported for recording with a high resolution which you can do with QuickTime player (1080 x 1920 with an iPhone 6).
